What you need to know about the Affordable Care Act

In 2010 The Affordable Care Act was signed into law. This was a great moment for our country. A chance to make our health care system work better, for more of us.  The ACA is designed to increase the quality and affordability of health insurance, lower our nation’s uninsured rate and reduce the costs of healthcare to citizens, businesses and the government. This new law has many features, including the health insurance marketplace, or exchanges—known in Nevada as Nevada Health Link. New health plans are offered for sale via this marketplace. The ACA also created 25 state health insurance co-operatives, including the first member-operated health insurance plan in Nevada history—Nevada Health Co-Op. You can shop for Nevada Health Co-Op plans on the Nevada Health Link exchange.

What’s in the Affordable Care Act for me?

The goal of the Affordable Care Act is to provide coverage to all Americans. It represents a new era in health for our state and promises increased access, fairness, and, most importantly, quality. The law requires that qualifying health insurance plans MUST provide certain benefits:

  • Coverage of dependents under parents’ insurance up to age 26
  • Coverage for people previously excluded for a pre-existing condition
  • Mental health and substance abuse disorder services
  • Prescription drugs
  • Rehabilitative services and devices
  • Laboratory services
  • Maternity and newborn care
  • Pediatric services, including oral and vision care

You will also be able to choose from various levels of plans offering varying degrees of coverage, deductible levels and premiums that suit your lifestyle and family needs.
